Gastrointestinal congenital malformations: a review of 230 cases at Albert Royer National Children’s Hospital Center in Senegal

Abstract Background Congenital malformations are the third cause of mortality in children under five. We aimed to report sociodemographic and diagnostic aspects gastrointestinal ones their outcomes. Methods conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study patients admitted from January 2018 2021 our department at Albert Royer National Children’s Hospital Center Dakar, Senegal. A total 230 were included. Results The frequency these was 6.18%. mean age 1.9 years, with neonates representing 43.48% males 59.56%. 64.35% came Dakar area. Parental consanguinity reported 11.73%, prenatal diagnosis 5.56% 36 cases, prematurity 28.84% 52 patients. most typical reasons for referral or symptoms constipation (23.91%), imperforated anus vomiting (23.48%). In 93.91%, malformation isolated, which Hirschsprung’s disease accounted 30.56% anorectal 30.09%. Esophageal atresia had more associated anomalies 28.57% each. VACTER-L association represented 21.42% anomalies. Mortality 27.83%, lethality 100% intestinal atresia, 87.5% esophageal 85.71% polymalformation.
